N.J. weather: Severe thunderstorms in forecast again today with threat of downpours, gusty winds [Video]

The threat of severe thunderstorms is once again in the forecast for New Jersey on Sunday with the potential for more nasty weather later this week, including the chance of Tropical Storm Debby pushing rain toward the state.

More than 5,000 homes and businesses remain without power as of 8 a.m. Sunday from thunderstorms that ripped across the state Saturday night.

In addition to heavy rain and the chance of flash flooding today, gusty winds could cause more outages.

“Storms this afternoon into evening will be capable of producing heavy downpours, contributing to localized flash flooding concerns at least,” the weather service said.

The thunderstorms are more likely to hit northern New Jersey, the weather service said. The storms will be isolated, but intense, “with locally damaging downburst wind gusts the main threat,” according to the weather service.
