WAVERLY, W.Va. (WTAP) – Every month, WTAP and Morrison Incorporated honors first responders for the work they do protecting us.
September’s recipient for the Golden Shield Award is Michael (Mike) Tanner with the Waverly Volunteer Fire Department.
Tanner joined the fire department in May 1986, when he was 16-years-old.
After a year and a half, he joined the military as a flight medic for the army.
Once Tanner he returned home from the Army, he also returned to the fire station.
Tanner said he wouldn’t have received this award without the help of others.
“It’s definitely an honor. It’s a surprise. It’s not me, it’s everyone around me. I mean, I wouldn’t be teaching, I wouldn’t be doing what I do if I didn’t have a strong support staff behind me,” said Tanner.
