Last of necessary funding secured for walk-bike bridge over I-89 [Video]

A major Chittenden County construction project is one step closer to becoming to a reality. The city of South Burlington said all of the money needed to build a walk-bike bridge over Interstate 89 has been secured, thanks to federal funding through the Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods grant program.Walking or biking across the bridge over I-89 connecting South Burlington to Burlington can be a challenge, especially at peak traffic times.”This is a really important corridor in our transportation system,” said Ilona Blanchard, community development director for the city of South Burlington.By 2026, the new walk-bike bridge will provide a safer option for non-vehicle transportation.”I will be able to walk to work without walking right next to six laves of weaving traffic,” said Blanchard with a laugh.The city has secured a more than $8.1 million grant from the Department of Transportation to build the walk-bike bridge over the highway, just south …
