UNION COUNTY, S.D. (KTIV) – A surge of water from the Big Sioux River gushed into McCook Lake on June 23, 2024, collapsing homes, washing out roads and leaving giant holes where lives once stood. Six months later residents say their community leaders failed them.
“They all decided to make us the sacrificial lambs to save (Dakota) Dunes and the businesses in North Sioux,” said Ed Faulk. “We don’t live near a river. We shouldn’t have to worry about that. They knew they were going to do it, they should have come around and told us and given us a warning.”
Anna and Ed Faulk live on Northshore Drive, across the street from the water’s edge. Their home still stands, but the damage left behind has cost them everything.
“A lot of us are retired and on fixed incomes and they considered us expendable. We weren’t important,” said Anna Faulk. …
