KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City’s mayor is taking a stand in Washington, D.C. for student loan relief. Mayor Quinton Lucas testified Wednesday on the need for more debt relief and for student loan providers to be held accountable.

It’s a topic that Mayor Lucas is passionate about since he was once a student loan borrower but said it’s nothing compared to the re-payment experiences, he’s heard from borrowers around Kansas City.

“Opportunities to start businesses, to build their lives, to raise their families without having to making choices between paying student loans and covering student debts,” said Lucas.

The mayor said student loan service providers are failing their borrowers, causing more unneeded financial burden. Loan companies like MOHELA, headquartered near St. Louis, is one of them.
