Veterans Day is a day to pay tribute to those who put their lives on the line for our country.KMBC 9 is a proud sponsor of the Heartland Honor Flight, which takes veterans to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor.For many veterans, this is the trip of a lifetime. The morning starts bright and early, taking off from KCI on a specially-decorated flight. The veterans then land to a water-cannon salute in Washington, where cheers and chants in their honor fill the halls of Reagan National Airport. From there, a police escort leads the way, taking the veterans to each of the memorials in their honor.During the trip, many veterans say they begin to unpack memories and emotions they’ve held onto since serving our country.
