The number of new homes completed last year declined by 6.7% and fell well short of government projections of 40,000.
A total of 30,330 dwellings were constructed in 2024, down from 32,525 the previous year, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The rate of decline in housebuilding actually accelerated in the final three months of the year when 8,732 homes were completed, a fall of 14.5% against the same period in 2023.
While the 16,200 scheme dwelling completions represented an increase of 4.6% year-on-year, the number of new apartments declined by nearly a quarter (-24.1% or 2,779) to 8,763.
There were 5,367 single dwellings completed, a decrease of 2.2% from 2023.
Scheme dwellings accounted for 53.4% of completions last year while 28.9% were apartments, and 17.7% were single dwellings.
More than half (54.3%) of new homes were built in Dublin or the surrounding mid-east region (Kildare, Louth, Meath, and Wicklow).
