Former BPD sergeant from Hyde Park sentenced in overtime fraud scheme [Video]

A former Boston Police Sergeant who admitted to his role in a long-running overtime fraud scheme at the department’s evidence warehouse was sentenced on Tuesday to three years of supervised release, with seven months to be served in home detention, according to acting U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Joshua S. Levy’s office.

William Baxter, 63, of Hyde Park, was also ordered to pay a $20,000 fine and $9,223 in restitution, Levy’s office said. In June 2021, Baxter pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds and one count of embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds.

Between March 2015 and June 2016, Baxter repeatedly submitted falsified time slips for two overtime shifts he did not fully work at the evidence warehouse. The first type of shift Baxter claimed to work, known as “purge” overtime, was a 4 to 8 p.m. weekday shift for disposing of …
