Elderly woman dead, 5 injured in Avondale home explosion [Video]

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A mobile home explosion early Monday (Dec.2 ) morning in Avondale left one person dead and five others injured, including two children, according to Jefferson Parish authorities.

The explosion happened just before 6:30 a.m. in the 500 block of Avondale Garden Road.

Emergency crews were already in the area responding to a gas leak caused by construction work when they heard the explosion. Jefferson Parish fire officials reported that the leak stemmed from a gas pipe damaged by a truck near a construction site.

Atmos Energy crews are currently checking gas meters in the area to ensure no additional risks remain.

Six people were inside the mobile home at the time of the explosion. An 87-year-old identified by family members as Delores Gabriel was killed, and the five others were taken to the hospital. Gabriel’s daughter and some of her grandchildren lived with her at the …
