Eir is to invest a further €500m to expand its fibre broadband network across Ireland in a decision the telecoms group said reinforced its commitment to enhancing nationwide connectivity.
The company intends to roll-out gigabit fibre connectivity to 1.9m homes and businesses across the country, up from 1.3m premises at present, with almost 500,000 now connected.
“A digitally inclusive economy and society are crucial for Ireland’s future. With an additional €500m committed investment in our communications infrastructure, Eir is committed to strengthening this foundation,” said Oliver Loomes, CEO of Eir.
The announcement coincides with the publication of Eir’s first Economic and Social Impact Report, which shows the company support €172bn in digital economic activity through its network.
By the end of 2028, in tandem with the expansion of the State fibre broadband network under the government’s National Broadband Plan, Eir intends that the more than 2.4m premises in Ireland will have access to gigabit broadband.
