MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Saturday starts the official Christmas and year-end travel season, and more people are expected to travel this year than ever before. AAA predicts a record 119.3 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home between Saturday and the start of the new year. That’s about 3 million more travelers this year than last year.
Air travel is expected to set a new record this holiday season with 7.85 million passengers, even though flights are 4% more expensive this holiday season compared to last year. The average domestic ticket is $830.
Nearly 90% of holiday travelers will be driving to their destinations. About 2.5 million more people are traveling by car than last year. Gas prices are lower than last year. The Alabama average is currently $2.70 per gallon, which is four cents per gallon less than this time last year.
