Charleston County ranked top three in state for HOA complaints [Video]

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Charleston County comes in third across the state for most complaints made against homeowner associations, according to the State Department of Consumer Affairs.

The department tracks the complaints by law, following a 2018 bill that addresses how to handle HOA issues and to get a better idea of major issues.

Charleston County made up 10% of the complaints about HOAs logged in 2023. The department got 517 total complaints about HOAs. That’s a fifty-six percent increase from 2022.

These complaints were against nearly 300 different HOA companies and raised hundreds of concerns. From failure to enforce bylaws to issues with special fees, people used the state system to make their voices heard.

According to the department, more than half of the complaints throughout last year were closed successfully, with the people who filed saying they got a good solution.
