North Wilkesboro Speedway continues as distribution hub for Hurricane Helene relief [Video]

HARVEST AND THE DISTRIBUTION SITE AT THE HISTORIC NORTH WILKESBORO SPEEDWAY CONTINUES TO ALSO GROW WITH FOOD AND SUPPLIES FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS. OUR KARA PETERS GIVES US A CLOSER LOOK AT THEIR EFFORTS, AND THE RESIDENTS WHO ARE PITCHING IN TO HELP. YOURE LOOKING AT NORTH WILKESBORO SPEEDWAY EXHIBIT HALL TURNED SUPPLY WAREHOUSE. IT HAS EVERYTHING FROM BABY FORMULA TO DIAPERS AND DRY FOOD. ITS BEEN AN ALL HANDS ON DECK OPERATION TO DISTRIBUTE THESE ITEMS TO THOSE ALL ACROSS WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. AS THE TRACK SITS EMPTY. THE ENTRANCE TO NORTH WILKESBORO SPEEDWAY IS FILLED WITH PALLETS OF WATER, DIAPERS, AND SUPPLIES, ALL FOR VICTIMS OF HURRICANE HELENE, AN EFFORT THAT HAS GROWN DRASTICALLY WITHIN A NEAR TWO WEEK SPAN. BEFORE WE WERE EXPECTING JUST 5 TO 10 TRUCKS, WE GOT 47 TRUCKS FROM FEMA, AND WE HAD A TOTAL OF 70 TRUCKS THE FIRST WEEK THAT CAME IN, AND THATS TRACTOR AND TRAILER LOADS, 11 GUARDSMEN ASSISTING THE SPEEDWAY IN BREAKING DOWN ITEMS AND SENDING THE SUPPLIES ACROSS 72 LOCATIONS. AND COUNTING ACROSS WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. FEDERAL PARTNERS NOT ONLY SENDING AID, BUT ALSO PEOPLE FROM STATES AWAY. TODAY WE HAD A LADY THAT DROVE ALL THE WAY FROM PITTSBURGH WITH A BOX TRUCK AND SHE BROUGHT BED FRAMES. SHE SHE BROUGHT BED FRAMES FROM A GROUP OF NUNS THAT LIVE UP THERE. THEYRE IN THEIR 80S. THEY KNEW THAT A NURSING HOME HAD GOTTEN DESTROYED. AND THOSE RESIDENTS WERE HAVING TO SLEEP ON COTS. SO THEY TOOK THEIR OWN BEDS AND PUT THEIR MATTRESSES ON THE FLOOR, TOOK THEIR BED FRAMES APART AND SHIPPED THEIR BED FRAMES TO US. WILKES COUNTY NATIVES BAILEY BROWN AND MADISON CHURCH, SPENDING THEIR AFTERNOON DROPPING OFF ITEMS TO NORTH WILKESBORO SPEEDWAY. THEY SAY IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO HELP IN THIS WAY. I FEEL LIKE THE MOUNTAINS ARE REALLY THE HEART OF NORTH CAROLINA, AND ITS WHAT MAKES NORTH CAROLINA SO SPECIAL, AT LEAST TO ME. SO TO SEE SO MUCH DEVASTATION AND SO MUCH WORK TO BE DONE IN OUR MOUNTAINS IS REALLY HEARTBREAKING. THESE DONATIONS COME AS THE SPEEDWAY PREPARES FOR RACES NEXT WEEK. THE PLAN IS TO MOVE AND CONSOLIDATE THESE ITEMS WITHOUT PRESSING PAUSE ON THEIR DISTRIBUTION EFFORTS IN NORTH WILKESBORO. IM KARA PETERS FOR WXII 12 NEWS. KARA. THANK YOU. YOU CAN FIND DONATION SITES AROUND THE PIEDMONT TRIAD BY SCANNING THIS QR CODE ON YOUR SCREEN. WE PUT TOGETHER A LIST WHICH INCLUDES DATES AND EXACT LOCATIONS. YOU CAN ALSO VISIT OUR MOBILE APP OR WEBSITE TO DONA

Residents of Boone say it could take months to recover fro Helene [Video]

SEVEN DAY FORECAST IN JUST A LITTLE BIT. LINDSEY. ALL RIGHT DAVE, THANK YOU. TONIGHT AT SIX ITS BEEN ALMOST TWO WEEKS SINCE HURRICANE HELENE TORE THROUGH WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. AND WERE NOW HEARING FROM A SURVIVOR. SHE WANTS TO MAKE SURE THAT AS THESE DAYS CONTINUE TO PASS, COMMUNITIES IN NEED ARE NOT FORGOTTEN. OUR JOSHUA DAVIS HAS OUR STORY TONIGHT FROM BOONE. THE DAMAGE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. BUSINESSES AND HOMES FLOODED THEIR CONTENTS PILED UP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO BE LATER THROWN AWAY. WHEREVER YOU GO, YOU SEE THE SCARS OF HURRICANE HELENE. NOW, WHEN I COME OUTSIDE, I JUST SMELL MOLD AND MUD AND JUST STANDING LIKE STANDING WATER. WHILE YOU CAN SEE CONSIDERABLE PROGRESS IN SOME PARTS OF BOONE, SOME SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES AND COUNTIES HAVENT BEEN AS FORTUNATE. CHRISTIE COLERIDGE FROM AVERY COUNTY, HAS BEEN COMING TO BOONE FOR SUPPLIES EVERY DAY WITH HER CAR DESTROYED FROM THE STORM. SHES HAD TO TAKE THE BUS ALL THE DONATIONS THAT ARE COMING IN ARE WONDERFUL AND AND YOU KNOW, THEYRE TRYING TO ORGANIZE TO SEE WHAT THINGS THAT THEY NEED THE MOST, WHICH COLD WEATHER IS COMING UP, WHICH, YOU KNOW, COATS AND SHOES AND BLANKETS ARE GOING TO BE SO IMPORTANT. THOSE SUPPLIES SHES BEEN TAKING HOME TO HER HUSBAND, WHO IS STILL RECOVERING FROM SURGERY HE HAD BEFORE HELENE HIT. HES HAVING ANXIETY BECAUSE YOU KNOW, EVERY EVERY HUSBAND, EVERY MAN WANTS TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILY AND AND NOW ITS MUCH HARDER FOR THEM TO DO SO. ITS LIKE A CLOUD IS OVER YOU AND YOU JUST CANT DO ENOUGH. BUT SHES WORRIED AS WE GET FARTHER FROM HELENE, I FEAR THAT AFTER A WHILE THAT YOU KNOW, THOSE DONATIONS AND THOSE PEOPLE THAT ARE GIVING ARE JUST GOING TO FADE OUT. AND SHE SAYS ITS THE LITTLE THINGS SHES ALREADY BEGINNING TO MISS MOST. JUST COMING OUT, WALKING MY DOG BY THE RIVER. I LIVE AT ALL THE TREES ARE UPROOTED AND ITS GONE. THE THE BEAUTIFUL PLACE THAT I WALKED MY DOG EVERY DAY. FIVE AND SIX TIMES A DAY. ITS GONE. I CANT EVEN GET TO THE RIVER. AND CHRISTIE BELIEVES IT COULD TAKE WEEKS, MONTHS, OR EVEN YEARS BEFORE THINGS FINALLY GET BACK TO NORMAL. AND EVEN THEN, IT MAY NOT BE THE SAME IN BOONE.
