SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Back-to-school time can be an adjustment for everyone in the family, but taking some proactive steps can make the transition easier for your kids and improve the atmosphere at home.

From the time you wake up, to getting out the door, your kids are watching. Avera Child Life Specialist Twila Perkinson explained that parents can set the tone to help adjust to the back-to-school routine.

“A calm demeanor to problem solve, to work through the questions that kids might have, and so we have that chance to show them what independence looks like, and not to be, you know, overly concerned about different things,” Perkinson explained.

Perkinson suggested offering some choices if the kids have trouble getting up and ready.

“Having the kids have a chance maybe, to decide themselves. What I want to do in the morning. Do I want to put …
