The Jackson County Legislature has voted against placing a Chiefs-only stadium sales tax on the November ballot.The ballot question would have called for a 20-year extension of the sales tax, reduced to one-quarter of a cent. The tax would have aimed to keep the Chiefs in Jackson County for 20 years.Because Missouri’s ballot certification deadline is Tuesday, it is highly unlikely the measure will appear on the November ballot. The vote was 5-4.The rejection concludes weeks of debate and discussion about the possibility of a new election in Jackson County.State, city funding possible to keep teams in MissouriMissouri Gov. Mike Parson has said multiple times this summer that his office is continuing to work on a public aid deal for the Chiefs and/or the Kansas City Royals.I think by the end of this year, were going to have something in place to propose for the stadiums, Parson said this summer.Parson has spoken with leaders in both Jackson County and Clay County about the teams. Clay County has been mentioned as a potential location for the Royals.Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said he expects the teams to announce their decisions later this fall.”We’re looking at weeks, not months, to get some idea of the next step, and ultimately, everyone can perhaps relax on the stadium discussion,” Lucas told KMBC earlier in August. “Because I think they’ll be staying home.”Following Monday’s vote by the Jackson County Legislature, Lucas again expressed confidence both teams would remain in Kansas City, Missouri: The city and Royals are reportedly exploring a new site for a baseball stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.Kansas Legislature approved STAR bonds proposalAfter Jackson County voters rejected a ballot question in April, Kansas leaders quickly pitched their own proposal. In June, Kansas lawmakers overwhelmingly approved a STAR bonds package that could lead to stadiums for both teams being constructed on the Kansas side.The bonds would cover up to 70 percent of a stadium project worth at least $1 billion. The language in the bill indicates that both teams have a year to accept the offer from Kansas.

Mass. man reported missing from S.C. vacation home found dead, officials say [Video]

A Massachusetts man who disappeared more than a week ago on Hilton Head Island has been found dead.His family confirmed the news Monday afternoon, saying his body was found four houses down from their rental unit.Stanley Kotowski, 60, of Methuen, was last seen Aug. 16 around 10:30 a.m. leaving the familys vacation rental at 226 South Sea Pines Drive, shoeless and without his phone or drivers license. “He just walked out the door. He had really bad insomnia for about a month. He doesn’t have dementia. His anxiety just kept getting worse and worse and worse and he started to get a little paranoid,” his wife Jackie Kotowski said.According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were alerted to the rental home around 11:30 a.m. Monday. Kotowski’s body was found underneath the home.”The body was recovered from underneath the home at about 3:30 p.m. this afternoon. The Beaufort County Coroners Office will conduct an autopsy on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, to determine the manner of death, as well as positively identify the decedent.” Video: Mass. man vanishes during SC vacationThe Beaufort County Sheriffs Office responded to the home at 12:42 p.m. the day he went missing. They mobilized a substantial search effort, deploying K-9s, drones and helicopters to locate Kotowski. According to a report from the BCSO, Jackie Kotowski told deputies that her husband “believes Sea Pines is a ‘set up’ and has a conspiracy that the people here are out to get him. She stated that Stanley has made several statements of people at this place “watching him.””She also told deputies that, before he left, Stanley told her, “Promise me you will go on without me.”Support for the family flooded in on social media, where people offered up their homes for the family to stay as search efforts continued.
