Alaska Railroad golden spike is up for auction- one business aims to bring it home | Arts & Entertainment [Video]

“The Golden Spike is a really important piece of history, both for the Alaska Railroad, really, and for the state of Alaska,” emphasized Meghen Clemens from the Alaska Railroad. 

This golden spike was driven in by President Warren Harding in Nenana in 1923. It marked the completion of the Alaska Railroad.

“It’s a part of history,” said Garry Farnham. 

That’s Garry Farnham of the Nenana Depot, where the golden spike was first hammered in. The spike was originally a gift from the city of Anchorage to Colonel Frederick Mears. And now it is being auctioned off, by Christie’s.

“It’s been in private ownership and those owners have decided to put it up for auction,” said Clemens. 

Alaskans and other businesses can bid on the spike. The Alaska Railroad is pledging to help one business secure the gold.
