A mathematics professor at Saigon University, Phuoc Tran escaped from Vietnam with his young family in 1975 and ended up in Omaha — where he dug graves at Calvary Cemetery for five years.
“I didn’t care what the work was,” he said in a 2015 World-Herald interview. “I didn’t want to sit on my hands and ask for financial help.”
He eventually dug his family out of its financial hole, learned to speak English and returned to teaching. He and wife Trinh raised four children in their adopted city — three of whom became doctors and one a pharmacist.
