Council pushes for two officers per patrol car in high-crime areas [Video]

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Members of the Jackson City Council have approved a measure they say could help make Jackson Police officers safer.

On Tuesday, the council unanimously approved a non-binding resolution pushing for the Jackson Police Department to have two officers per vehicle in high-crime areas.

According to a copy of the measure, having two officers per car would improve overall safety and help those men and women better handle violent situations.

“It’s routine when we go to work, we look to come home from work, hug our families, eat dinner, and everything else,” said Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes, who introduced the measure. “Until we get these things under control, get these bad actors out of here, let’s make sure [these officers] are definitely safe.”

Stokes said two officers would not be needed in all areas, but in parts of the city that have higher levels of crime.
