Thinking about the future ramifications of sea level rise in New Jersey might first bring to mind what rising oceans could mean for coastal and inland homes.

Or businesses.

Plenty of other infrastructure — from transportation hubs to schools to public utilities — also exist in places climate scientists tell us are likely to be overcome by water in the years and decades to come. Water that comes from the surrounding ocean, and smaller waterways — but also water from more intense rainfall.

“Between 1911 and December of 2022 sea level rose approximately 18.2 inches at Atlantic City, more than double the global average,” according to a Rutgers University report on the impacts we’ve already seen.

A federal report from 2022 said it is increasingly likely that the sea level along U.S. coasts — including New Jersey — will rise at least 2 feet by the end of this century due to human-caused climate change.
