Vikings Appear to Have Decided on Week 1 Starting Quarterback [Video]

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback competition hasn’t been much of a competition thus far in camp.

Veteran Sam Darnold, whom Minnesota signed this offseason to a one-year, $10 million deal, has received pretty much all of the first team reps in 11-on-11 drills, per ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. Rookie first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, whom the Vikings selected with the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has primarily been taking snaps with the backups.

This isn’t exactly a surprise, though, according to Seifert, who says the Vikings have no plans of rushing McCarthy’s development.

“This should be no surprise to anyone who has listened to coach Kevin O’Connell talk about the position,” Seifert wrote. “While McCarthy is clearly the club’s future quarterback, team leaders are in agreement that his ascension will not be rushed. Darnold has not been perfect in camp, but he has developed a rapport with receiver Justin Jefferson, among others.”
