The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced on Tuesday that it will be exploring MDMA trials for veterans experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and alcohol abuse problems.
VA researchers affiliated with Brown University and Yale will be setting up trials over the next five years using a $1.5 million grant. It will be the first time that the VA has tried using psychedelics for mental health care since the 1960s.
MDMA, also known as ecstasy, is known for its mood-enhancing and hallucinogenic properties.
Under Secretary of Veterans Affairs for Health Dr. Shereef Elnahal said: “VA is on the cutting edge of clinical research for Veteran health, including in the investigation of psychedelics for mental health.
