Veggie prices to drop as warm end to winter spurs glut [Video]

Shoppers are being urged to take advantage of an oncoming drop in vegetable prices as suppliers and stores look to offload a sudden glut.

Farmer and founder of horticulture business education company Veg Education, Catherine Velisha, said a warm winter in Queensland and recent warmer winds in Victoria had accelerated the growth of winter plantings.

It means veggies that would typically be heading to the shelves later are on the way now.

Velisha said she expected the glut to last about four to six weeks.

“Anything that can be planted” would be affected, including broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, Asian vegetables, and spring onions.

Once the new rush of winter plantings have been sold, Velisha said, she expected prices to swing back to normal.
