A gas leak has closed Genesee Street and led to the evacuation of several homes and businesses in New Hartford Monday afternoon.

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. — A gas leak has closed Genesee Street and led to the evacuation of several homes and businesses in New Hartford Monday afternoon.

The New Hartford Police Department said a contractor working on a project on Genesee Street struck a gas line just before noon.

Officials evacuated several homes and businesses in the area of Butler Place and Campion Road.

The Village Point apartments were also evacuated.

New Hartford Police say that Genesee Street is currently closed from the Route 8 ramp to Route 12.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

National Grid is working on a temporary fix to stop the leak.
