Thousands of people have gathered for counter-protest in Walthamstow, north London, amid fears it was to be targeted by far-right thugs.
The Metropolitan Police had vowed to use “every power, tactic and tool” to protect London amid reports of planned anti-immigration protests in London and other parts of the UK on Wednesday.
But the protests did not appear to materialise, and instead counter-protests were held by anti-racism protesters across the country.
Organisers say 10,000 people attended the counter-protest in Walthamstow.
Some 6,000 riot officers around the country had been braced to intervene on a swathe of “Enough is Enough” events, with police monitoring reports of at least 100 possible gatherings.
The Met said that 1,300 public order officers were ready to be deployed across the capital.
Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said police nationwide have changed tactics so they can show “overwhelming force”, to make sure “thugs on the streets don’t succeed”.
