U.S. Sen. Katie Britt co-sponsoring measure to cut childcare costs [Video]

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WHNT) — U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) is co-sponsoring legislation aimed at reducing childcare costs.

Britt said she wants to bring down the cost of child care in the U.S. without creating an entitlement program. The Republican senator said as a mother of two she had experienced America’s “broken children system firsthand.”

The proposal includes expanding tax credits and childcare tax deductions for parents. It would also provide tax credits for businesses that provide childcare for employees.

Britt held a media call today to discuss the proposal she is co-sponsoring with U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va).

“Working parents with just one child, assuming an employer contributes to the Dependent Care Assistance Program, DCAP, would have to pay $5,662 out of pocket for child care,” Britt said. “But our bill with that out-of-pocket cost would actually go down to $662 a year. If my bill passes, that’s nearly a $5,000 savings annually for parents. …
