A Galway woman has revealed how her farming background – with the help of a Cuban connection – helped to sow the seeds of Ireland’s coffee revolution, writes Colm McGuirk.

The nation’s growing love affair with coffee is starkly illustrated in the growth of the number of roasters here over the past 20 years, from just a handful to more than 200.

And supermarket sales show a refining of taste among consumers in that time – though instant coffee still remains slightly more popular than beans and ground roasts when it comes to buying for home consumption.

Anne Abberton, founder and managing director of FiXX Coffee, who supply independent shops and cafes and sell online, said there has been a “huge shift” in the industry here since she started her business in 2004.
