Tennessee lawmaker proposes real-time GPS tracking for violent, repeat offenders [Video]

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A proposed pilot program aimed at curbing violent crime by requiring repeat offenders to wear a real-time GPS monitoring device while out on bond is gaining traction in the state.

Rep. G.A. Hardaway Sr. (D-Memphis) told News 2 he’s working with Memphis officials to first launch a local pilot program implementing GPS monitoring for repeat offenders of violent and property crimes. Then, he’ll present data from that program to Tennessee lawmakers in hopes of passing legislation statewide.

“Innocent, law-abiding citizens are locked down; imprisoned in their own homes, and the criminals are running rampant; running free in the streets,” Rep. Hardaway said. “We have got to do something to stop it now.”

According to the Memphis police chief, 40% of the people arrested in the city are repeat offenders. Hardaway believes mandating repeat criminals wear a live GPS monitor will bring that number down.
