[video:7499]GRAFTON – Hiking enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers can look forward to a series of on-trail and off-trail guided hikes starting this fall at Pere Marquette State Park. The hikes are set for each Saturday and Sunday from Sept. 14 to Oct. 27, 2024.Each Saturday’s on-trail hikes will start at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with the Visitor’s Center serving as the starting point for both time slots. Additional on-trail hikes will be held each following Sunday morning at 10 a.m., with off-trail hikes taking place on Sunday afternoons at 1 p.m.Lev Smolianski, the natural resource coordinator for Pere Marquette, said on Our Daily Show! on Riverbender.com that the off-trail hikes offer a more adventurous approach to exploring the park.“Off-trail hikes are going to be geared towards people who want a little more adventure, more strenuous of a hike,” he said. “They’re going to get dirty, they might get stung, it’s going to be a great time.”Each hike also offers an educational experience, teaching hikers more about what the nature of the region has to offer – including the native the paw-paw plant, which is often sampled by hikers.“I really enjoy teaching people about the ecology of their backyard,” he said. “I also really enjoy feeding people wild plants and seeing their faces light up when they eat a paw-paw for the first time.”Smolianski added that while the park has nine miles of hiking trails, only about 15-25% of the park is accessible by trail – explorers will need to stray from the path if they “want to learn some secrets about Pere Marquette, want to see some old homesteads, caves, fire roads – things you don’t really get to see.”To find out more about these guided hikes and other events coming up this fall at Pere Marquette, stay tuned to their Facebook page or website, or see the full interview with Smolianski at the top of this story or on Riverbender.com/video.

Missouri voters will make their voices heard on abortion rights this November.A decision handed down by the Missouri Supreme Court on Tuesday reversed a decision that led to Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft’s decertification of Amendment 3 on Monday. The decision should be the deciding factor on whether or not Missourians will get to vote on the amendment. If passed, it would provide constitutional protection for abortion in the state. The ruling came just hours ahead of a deadline to place measures on November’s absentee ballots before printing at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. In decertifying the amendment, Ashcroft cited a lower court’s ruling on a suit that was issued late Friday out of Cole County, saying the amendment was invalid because it did not include which laws would be repealed if passed.Backers of the amendment took issue with that argument because laws would be superseded and overlap with current law if voters approve the amendment this fall also at issue today is whether the secretary of state has the authority to decertify an initiative petition from the ballot after he already certified it. The Missouri Supreme Court began hearing oral arguments in this case starting at 8:30 a.m. this morning and, ultimately, sided with backers of the amendment. The state’s high court did not side with a motion to hold the secretary of state in contempt for the decertification.”Respondent Ashcroft certified the petition as sufficient prior to that deadline, and any action taken to change that decision weeks after the statutory deadline expired is a nullity and of no effect,” the court said in its ruling. There are a few protestors still outside the Missouri Supreme Court building. Earlier this morning, backers of the amendment and several pro-life groups argued over the lower court’s ruling. Missouri banned most abortions immediately after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. There is an exception for medical emergencies, but almost no abortions have occurred at Missouri facilities since then.

Former President Donald Trump spoke heatedly in Tuesday’s presidential debate about wanting Russia’s war in Ukraine to be over but twice refused to directly answer a question about whether he wanted U.S. ally Ukraine to win.Trump also falsely claimed that the war had killed millions since Russia invaded Ukraine 2 1/2 years ago, while the U.N. says 11,700 civilian deaths have been verified. And he claimed without evidence that Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, had bungled a diplomatic mission just days before Russia launched the invasion.Trump’s comments are likely to heighten concern among Ukraine and its supporters that his return to the White House could push Ukraine into a losing peace deal with its stronger neighbor, Russia. Western-allied Ukraine depends on U.S. military and financial aid to keep up its fight against Russian forces, and it would have grave difficulty withstanding their attacks if the U.S. were to pull that support. It’s “a very simple question. Do you want Ukraine to win this war? moderator David Muir of ABC News asked Trump in Tuesday’s debate, the first of two times he pressed Trump for a direct answer.I want the war to stop, Trump responded. I want to save lives, he added, going on to claim falsely that millions were dying in the conflict.Muir then asked him again, questioning whether Trump believed its in the U.S. best interest for Ukraine to win this war.The Republican former president responded, I think its the U.S. best interest to get this war finished and just get it done.Trump has said repeatedly he would have a peace deal done between Ukraine and Russia within a day if he is elected, although he doesn’t say how. The fear of Ukraine’s supporters is that the kind of deal Trump is talking about would amount to the country’s democratic government capitulating significant territory and sovereignty to Russia’s harsh demands.Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this year insisted Ukraine must give up vast amounts of territory and avoid joining NATO simply as a condition to start negotiations. The reason that Donald Trump says that this war would be over within 24 hours is because he would just give it up, Harris said Tuesday. She accused Trump of being in what you think is a friendship with … a dictator who would eat you for lunch.Trump has a long history of admiring comments about Putin, including calling his tactics in the 2022 invasion of Ukraine genius and very savvy. Trump expresses no such warmth for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling him a salesman for his appeals to allies for weapons. The Biden administration says a victory in Ukraine would embolden Putin to move against other Western-allied democracies in Europe. President Joe Biden and his top officials were key players in rallying international support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia since even before Russian forces rolled into Ukraine. The U.S. spurred allies into action by pointing to declassified intelligence showing Russian preparations for the invasion.Just days before the invasion in late February 2022, Biden sent Harris to the annual Munich Security Conference in Germany, a high-profile mission to consolidate support for Ukraine among European and NATO leaders. Harris met on the sidelines with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.Trump during the debate linked the timing of Harris’ trip to Europe to Putin’s sending troops into Ukraine days later. They sent her in to negotiate with Zelenskyy and Putin. And she did. And the war started three days later, he said. However, the U.S. government said the Russian troops massing on Ukraine’s border and intelligence assessments already pointed to an imminent invasion. And Putin was not at the security conference in Germany, and Harris didn’t meet with him.
