49ers Ricky Pearsall catches first career pass [Video]

The San Francisco 49ers got a lift from rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall, making his NFL debut exactly 50 days after being shot in the chest, but might have lost starting receiver Brandon Aiyuk to a significant knee injury.Pearsall was activated from the non-football injury list on Saturday and was on the field when the 49ers hosted the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch. He came in for his first play on San Francisco’s opening drive and caught his first career pass late in the second quarter.Video above: 49ers honor officer, surgeon who helped Ricky Pearsall after shootingPearsall’s return proved to be especially important because the Niners were missing their top three receivers after Aiyuk went down late in the first half with a right knee injury.Aiyuk was hit on the knee after making a catch and stayed down for a few minutes. He was helped off the field and then carted to the locker room. He was ruled out for the rest of the game, and there was no immediate word on the severity of the injury.Aiyuk, who signed a $120 million, four-year extension in late August following a lengthy contract “hold in,” has 25 catches for 374 yards this season. He was a second-team All-Pro last season when he had 1,342 yards receiving.San Francisco was already missing No. 3 receiver Jauan Jennings, who was out with a hip injury. Their other starting wideout, Deebo Samuel, was reported as sick just before the game. He tried to play but went back to the locker room during the first half after playing only four snaps and was ruled out for the first of the game.Pearsall returned to practice this past Monday for the first time since he was shot in the chest in San Francisco’s Union Square area on Aug. 31. He was hospitalized overnight but avoided damage to any organs and nerves and was back working out at the team facility the following week.Pearsall, who was drafted in the first round in April, missed the majority of training camp practices with injuries to his hamstring and shoulder but was on track to be ready for the opener before he was shot.He began his college career at Arizona State and transferred to Florida for his final two seasons. He had 65 catches for 965 yards and four touchdowns last season for the Gators and finished his college career with 159 catches for 2,420 yards and 14 TDs.The Chiefs beat the 49ers 28-18 on Sunday.

Biden making quick trip to Germany before US election to discuss Ukraine and democracy with allies [Video]

President Joe Biden has long believed diplomacy is about personal relationships and he’ll spend Friday in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as his time in office is on the cusp of ending. There is also a planned meeting with other leaders in the European Quad, a group that in addition to Biden and Scholz includes French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described Biden as having a close relationship with Scholz, who early this year helped broker a multi-country prisoner swap that brought back to the United States the journalist Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan. The German leader told Biden before the deal in words to the effect, For you, I will do this.”We have worked together closely to strengthen our economies for both our people and provide critical support for Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russian aggression, Jean-Pierre said at Wednesdays White House briefing. The president really wanted to make sure to go to Germany to thank Chancellor Scholz directly. But Biden’s whirlwind trip starting on Thursday is hardly just a social visit. The United States and Germany have been the largest two sources of aid to Ukraine as it fights to repel a Russian invasion. And with less than three weeks before the U.S. presidential election, Biden also feels obligated to ready allies for the possible return to the White House of Republican Donald Trump, who has antagonized U.S. friends while displaying an appreciation for Russian President Vladimir Putin. The administration said Biden has no plans while in Europe to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but the two spoke on Wednesday about additional military aid, with the White House announcing $425 million in assistance, bringing the total support to more than $64 billion over two and a half years. In addition to Ukraine, Biden and Scholz plan to discuss European Union relations, democratic values, trade and technology issues, global supply chains, tensions in the Middle East and security issues in the Indo-Pacific region. While in Germany, Biden will also meet with its president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.Earlier this month, the U.S. president had delayed a trip planned to Germany and Angola in order to oversee relief efforts ahead of Hurricane Milton making landfall in Florida. He now plans to go to Angola in December. His trip to Germany comes as Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, has entered an aggressive sprint to persuade and turn out voters in an election that could ultimately determine the future of Biden’s legacy of having strengthened NATO and built up relations in Asia to counter China’s influence.Trump has questioned America’s commitment to defending NATO allies who are attacked, something that Biden called un-American in February. The whole world heard it and the worst thing is he means it, the president said.Trump has talked about applying tariffs on imports from U.S. allies in Europe and Asia, which could potentially strain relations with countries that could counter Russia, China and other rivals. Our allies have taken advantage of us more so than our enemies, Trump said Tuesday at the Economic Club of Chicago.Trump declined to say whether hes continued to speak with Putin since losing the 2020 election but added that it would not be a negative if he and the Russian leader had been in touch. Bob Woodward in his new book War reported that Trump and Putin have spoken seven times. But I will tell you that if I did, its a smart thing, Trump said. If Im friendly with people, if I can have a relationship with people, thats a good thing and not a bad thing in terms of a country.

Boston teachers stage ‘walk-in’ rallies to pressure contract talks [Video]

Members of the Boston Teachers Union staged demonstrations before classes Thursday to put pressure on Boston Public Schools for a new contract.”We’re now going into our second month without a contract,” organizer Erika Kouka of the BTU said.Thursdays rallies followed similar “walk-ins” last month.Caroline Alexis, a Boston Public School teacher and BTU representative, said she thinks there has been some progress.”Well, I feel like BPS is starting to take us a little bit more seriously. They are starting to come with actual responses to our requests,” she said.”For the first time, BPS at our last session, so I believe that was last week actually did come with an inclusion proposal, whereas previously they had said that they were not willing at all to negotiate around that topic, so we are getting some movement, but it’s definitely not enough,” Kouka said. The Teachers Union said pay and benefits are on the table. BTU is also seeking to end the practice of requiring general education teachers to also serve as special education and ESL teachers.”We are the only district in the entire state that requires teachers to use multiple licenses, as if that’s efficient for kids,” Alexis said.Mayor Michelle Wu, at a ribbon-cutting at CarGurus new office in the Back Bay, explained that the former model for students with Individual Education Plans required students to travel to schools that offer the needed services.”Now, we’re flipping that around so that services will follow the students, but it requires a lot more flexibility in being able to have inclusion across the board so that that will eventually serve students and their families much better,” Wu said. The demonstrations were taking place before school, and once the bell rang, the teachers were in the classroom with the students. Negotiations are continuing between BPS and the Teachers Union.
