Patrick Mahomes discusses Kareem Hunt’s return to the Chiefs [Video]

All right guys looking fire away after he said that he maintained *** relationship with cream over the years. Just wonder what that journey has been like for him from your perspective over the past, since he’s left here. Yeah, I mean, obviously, uh Crane was *** close friend of mine while, while he was here, um just being in the same draft class or everything like that. Um He came to my wedding. Um, but obviously he, he went to Cleveland. Um had, he had *** good career there has learned and become *** better person and I’m glad to have him back now. Um And let’s get him accustomed to the offense and see how fast we can get him out there over the past couple of days. Um Yeah, I mean, I, I mean, I know he was coming into the building. Um, obviously, I know he had to go through his, his workout process and, and meeting with the coaches and, and beaten everybody. Um But at the end of the day, man, I just, I just root for the, the person to, to keep becoming *** better and better person. Um, and the football secondary and, but I’m glad to have him back and in the building and, um, iii, I gave him *** high five and *** hug when I, when I saw him because, uh, it’s *** person that I, I used to spend *** lot of time with *** long time ago when, when you left. But I think the term you used was we don’t do those things. So, I, I wonder how you found *** way to balance both your friendship with him, but also to condemn the behavior. What, what, what that’s like for *** friend. Yeah. I mean, I think anyone, um, everybody has friends that make mistakes and obviously some are bigger than others. Um, but at the same time you wanna make the, the person better and you wanna see them taking the right steps to become *** better person for themselves and their family and the rest of society. And so, uh, I think you’ve seen that with Kareem. Um, and so I’ve stayed in touch with him just to see how he’s doing, how his family’s doing everything like that. Um, and he’s been able to, to carve out *** great career in the NFL. But I mean, you’ve seen, he’s been able to keep his nose clean and be *** better person and that’s what you want. Um, in order to make everybody better people, you Andre and locks up like draft film and always sharing things. Um, what did you see on the thing, what, what can you reasonably expect production wise on the field once he does get, get caught up? Yeah, I mean, *** guy that plays hard plays physical, um, catch the ball in the backfield, um, still has explosion in between the tackles. Um, and so, um, we have *** lot of guys in that running back room now that are gonna have *** chance to kind of take up some of that role uh while Z is out. Um But they’re ready for it. Um And I’m glad that that Veach has built such *** great running back room and adding Karim is gonna be another step in that of, of taking ***, *** vital role of this team um until we can get pop back. We didn’t have *** chance to ask coach about what’s gonna happen at left tackle today and what do you see? And what’s it been like with, with Kingsley and Juan over the last couple of days looking at film? And what do you, who do you expect to be out there with you? Yeah, I mean, I don’t, I don’t make those decisions. Um At the end of the day, I have *** lot of trust in both those guys. I thought Kingsley had good snaps, had bad snaps. That’s just part of the process of being *** rookie going up against *** great pass rusher. Um But he, I think he saw, he took accountability. He’s learning from it um, and then Juan has played snaps as well and he’s done, he’s done great things. Um, he’s getting better and better and so I think the coaches will at the end of the day make *** determination, they think is best for the team. Um, but I’m, I trust both those guys, whoever’s out there, there are guys that are gonna take the car to check on that. But how do you replace? Like he just brought *** different pop in energy. How do you replicate that and I guess replace that? Yeah, I mean, that, that’s gonna be everybody that’s not gonna be just that running back room. I mean, you said the energy that he brings, I mean, the way he runs the football, the way he pops up, he’s always positive mindset. Um That’s gonna have to take other guys to step up with. It starts with me, I gotta bring that mindset. I gotta play better football, put guys in better positions. Um But at the same time, I have to keep the energy going. Um And so that’s *** special thing that pop does. I don’t think one person can do that have that amount of energy and play that hard. I mean, it, it really is *** special characteristic of them. Um But I think the whole team can come together and, and, and bring that energy uh in his absence you had. What was your like for? Yeah, I mean, he, he loves the game, so he wants to be out there and he, he put so much work into it. So I think at first, I mean, you obviously are up um that you have to, you have the injury. But if I know anything, I know that me be getting after it, it’s gonna be more about um the trainers having to hold him back than him, uh not getting in and getting to work because, uh he loves it so much, man and he’s in the building, he’s working. Um, and I, I’m excited for it for the comeback man. He’s *** come back ready to go whenever he gets back. How fast did you could you tell him what had happened to him? And, and he made *** point of saying he wasn’t gonna let anybody help him off the field, he could get off the field himself. Yeah, I knew I didn’t see the tackle because of, of the angle that I, I was at. Uh, I’ve seen it obviously now, um, the fact that he popped up and he was like running up the field and I mean, I think he was trying to get back on the field and that just speaks to the type of competitor that he is. And so, um, I didn’t realize it was as serious of an injury until after the game just at the moment that we were in. Um, but, uh, like I said, he’s gonna attack it man, and he’ll be back. I’m sure sooner rather than later, I was gonna say, what, what’s the mindset required to have success on the road? Is it, is it different than just any other game? Um I think uh the mindset is that you have to just come in with the mentality and you really sharpen up on your details, which I think offensively we, we have to do anyways um starting with me. Um And so this is *** good team. Uh *** lot of great players, I’ve played against *** lot of these guys uh that are all in one spot now with *** great defensive scheme and it’s gonna be *** great environment Sunday night football um in Atlanta. So, um we’re going to sharpen up our stuff offensively, defense is playing great, they’re gonna keep playing good. Um But I gotta, we, we gotta continue to get better and better at the little things and so that we can go out there and just play free when we get there. What are the challenges with going up against the Reg Morris uh defense? Generally speaking, of course. Yeah, well, first off his schemes, he has *** really good scheme. Um He has *** good understanding of defenses um and what the offense is try to attack in his defense. Um So I think that along with his very game plan specific, so even though he has his scheme and has things that he works on um, he tries to take away what you’re best at. Um, that’s what all the best, uh, defensive coordinators do. And now he’s *** head coach and you can see just from the little interactions I’ve had with him and the interactions I’ve seen, I mean, he’s *** great leader. Um, and I think that’s something that every player that you see that’s played, uh, on one of his team’s offense or defensively has said. And so it’s gonna be *** great challenge for us, man. Um And I’m excited for it last couple and, um, Patrick, I’m sure you’re aware of this, but you had *** lot of passes over either at or behind the line of scrimmage. Uh Last week, it’s starting to become *** trend league wide. What do you attribute it to, uh whether from your standpoint or just when you’re watching other guys play? Yeah, I think, um I, I think this last week in general, I didn’t play to my standard, so I think I have to be better. There was some opportunities down the middle areas of the field that I think I missed. Um uh we hit obviously the deep one to rashid, but um whenever teams take away the deep stuff, you have to throw it under your knee, but you still have to have the ability to, to threaten the middle of the field. So that’s something that I will continue to work on and get better at. Um And then limiting mistakes for myself. Um But I think across the league, I think these teams are just gonna make you drive the entire field and that’s just kind of the, the, the thought process and then try not to let you score in the, in the red zone, but there is opportunities out there and you just have to execute it at *** higher level. There’s not as many as maybe I I’ve had previously similar question that you just answered it, but you mentioned earlier that you have to get better with the details. Is it that just yeah, that uh this with the, the tight zone coverages, kind of the mat zone coverages that you’re playing, the windows aren’t big. Um And so you have to be on time, even if you look at the first interception I threw, I mean, Travis had *** window there. I was just was late to that window. Um And so just being on time and if you don’t, the defenses are collapsing those windows quick. And so those are the little things that I have to be better at of being getting the ball there on time accurately. Um And at um not making *** mistake at the same time. So it’s just tough for you to continue to work on throughout the season. Um But uh we got to be better. I gotta be better as the season goes on.
