The death of the world’s most famous grizzly bear on a highway in western Wyoming has made an orphan of its cub, but biologists say the youngster’s chances of surviving even with a chilly mountain winter coming on are good.”High chances of survival going forward for the yearling, even being on his own,” said Grand Teton National Park bear biologist Justin Schwabedissen. It should be reassurance to the many worrying. After grizzly No. 399 died in a vehicle strike Tuesday south of Jackson Hole, her male cub’s fate has been a big topic of discussion on a popular Facebook page dedicated to following the bear and her previous cubs. Evidently unhurt by the crash, the cub hasn’t been seen since. Some online commenters say the cub known informally as “Rowdy” or “Spirit” should be found and rescued.Others agree with the usual approach of wildlife managers: Don’t interfere with nature. So far, no cub search has been announced.Had the cub been born last winter, survival would be much less likely. But this youngster’s age of nearly two years, its healthy size and the season almost time to den up, safe and snug for the winter are factors working in his favor, according to Schwabedissen.Perils for grizzlies in the region besides highways include getting shot when the smell of game carcasses draw them into unintentional confrontations with elk hunters. Others are killed when they acquire too much of a taste for apples, dog food, garbage and other human sources of food near homes and become a risk for people. This 28-year-old momma bear was the oldest known reproducing female grizzly in the Yellowstone ecosystem. Starting in 2004, she birthed 18 cubs in eight litters and had a penchant for hanging out with them near roads in Grand Teton.Such behavior made her a hit with tourists, sometimes drawing hundreds at a time and causing traffic jams. Dozens of wildlife photographers and scientists she’s named for a numbered tag they put in her ear watched her as well. She’s not the only famous animal in the region. Last summer, a confirmed sighting of a rare white buffalo calf in Yellowstone stirred widespread excitement. Just a handful of people saw the bison calf soon after it was born and there have been no sightings since. But according to Native American legend, the calf fulfills an old prophesy and foretells better times ahead. In 2009, a 725-pound Yellowstone bull elk known by his ear tag number drew attention when he died at a ripe old age of at least 15. Famous for getting aggressive with other males and cars elk No. 6 suffocated after tripping on a fence and getting pinned between rocks on his back.Other Yellowstone-area wildlife are known only in death, such as a wolf, which a man ran down with a snowmobile and brought into a bar in western Wyoming before killing it last winter.Grizzly No. 399 and her cub leave a more uplifting legacy: helping people appreciate grizzlies as their numbers in the Yellowstone region continue to rebound from just over 100 in the 1970s to around 1,000 today. Some of her offspring have had cubs that are now much older than her youngest who’s now out there alone, fending for himself.”She truly was an icon and ambassador for not only for of her species but also the wildness of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem,” Grand Teton Superintendent Chip Jenkins said.

We’re moving through October and it’s time to give the running backs their day in the sun, a Shuffle Up of fantasy football’s most critical position. What’s happened to this point is merely an audition. The ranks and tiers you find below are what I’d use if I were entering a fresh fantasy football draft starting now. Use these tiers to self-scout your roster or as a sounding board when you’re considering trades and pickups.

President Joe Biden has long believed diplomacy is about personal relationships and he’ll spend Friday in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as his time in office is on the cusp of ending. There is also a planned meeting with other leaders in the European Quad, a group that in addition to Biden and Scholz includes French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described Biden as having a close relationship with Scholz, who early this year helped broker a multi-country prisoner swap that brought back to the United States the journalist Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan. The German leader told Biden before the deal in words to the effect, For you, I will do this.”We have worked together closely to strengthen our economies for both our people and provide critical support for Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russian aggression, Jean-Pierre said at Wednesdays White House briefing. The president really wanted to make sure to go to Germany to thank Chancellor Scholz directly. But Biden’s whirlwind trip starting on Thursday is hardly just a social visit. The United States and Germany have been the largest two sources of aid to Ukraine as it fights to repel a Russian invasion. And with less than three weeks before the U.S. presidential election, Biden also feels obligated to ready allies for the possible return to the White House of Republican Donald Trump, who has antagonized U.S. friends while displaying an appreciation for Russian President Vladimir Putin. The administration said Biden has no plans while in Europe to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but the two spoke on Wednesday about additional military aid, with the White House announcing $425 million in assistance, bringing the total support to more than $64 billion over two and a half years. In addition to Ukraine, Biden and Scholz plan to discuss European Union relations, democratic values, trade and technology issues, global supply chains, tensions in the Middle East and security issues in the Indo-Pacific region. While in Germany, Biden will also meet with its president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.Earlier this month, the U.S. president had delayed a trip planned to Germany and Angola in order to oversee relief efforts ahead of Hurricane Milton making landfall in Florida. He now plans to go to Angola in December. His trip to Germany comes as Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, has entered an aggressive sprint to persuade and turn out voters in an election that could ultimately determine the future of Biden’s legacy of having strengthened NATO and built up relations in Asia to counter China’s influence.Trump has questioned America’s commitment to defending NATO allies who are attacked, something that Biden called un-American in February. The whole world heard it and the worst thing is he means it, the president said.Trump has talked about applying tariffs on imports from U.S. allies in Europe and Asia, which could potentially strain relations with countries that could counter Russia, China and other rivals. Our allies have taken advantage of us more so than our enemies, Trump said Tuesday at the Economic Club of Chicago.Trump declined to say whether hes continued to speak with Putin since losing the 2020 election but added that it would not be a negative if he and the Russian leader had been in touch. Bob Woodward in his new book War reported that Trump and Putin have spoken seven times. But I will tell you that if I did, its a smart thing, Trump said. If Im friendly with people, if I can have a relationship with people, thats a good thing and not a bad thing in terms of a country.
