Trump hosting House Republicans at Mar-a-Lago to craft strategy [Video]

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to huddle with House Republicans throughout the weekend at Mar-a-Lago, a few days after strategizing with GOP Senators on Capitol Hill about the best way to advance his tax and immigration priorities. See the story in the video aboveRepublicans, now in control of both chambers of Congress, are still crafting a massive legislative package, largely behind closed doors. “There is great unity, whether it is one bill or two bills, it’s going to get done one way or the other, Trump said after his meeting with Senators on Wednesday. But, with a razor-thin edge in the House, Trump will need to wrangle support from different factions of the GOP to achieve his goals. One group of lawmakers expected to sit down with Trump this weekend is threatening to withhold support from Trumps sweeping agenda if it doesnt lift the state and local tax deduction cap known as SALT. But that could prompt a backlash from fiscal hawks within the GOP. “You’ve got some die-hard conservatives who don’t like the fact that Donald Trump may well add to the budget deficit with tax cuts, and you’ve got other Republicans who come from much more moderate districts where mass deportations may cost them their jobs, said political analyst Marc Sandalow.Early signs of bipartisanship At least one immigration bill is already advancing with bipartisan support, signaling that Democrats are looking for ways to work across the aisle on the issue, even as theyre expected to rebuff other parts of Trumps agenda. The bill passed in the House this week and cleared a key procedural hurdle in the Senate with an 84-9 vote. “This is a first small step to be able to get control of our border, said Sen. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma.The legislation would require mandatory detention of undocumented immigrants who have been charged with or convicted of burglary, theft, larceny or shoplifting, or if they admit to committing one of those acts. The Laken Riley Act is named after a nursing student who was murdered by an immigrant who entered the U.S. illegally. “Laken’s killer robbed a business before he robbed Laken of her life, said Senator Chuck Grassley, R- Iowa.But critics, like the ACLU, argue the bill threatens civil liberties by requiring detention of people who have not been convicted or even charged with a crime. The bill is a wolf in sheeps clothing; it exploits the tragic death of Ms. Laken Riley to expand the detention of people accused of non-violent offenses, without actually improving public safety but while encouraging discriminatory and arbitrary over detention, the ACLU furthered in a letter to Senators. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who previously refused to bring the bill up for a vote when Democrats were in the majority, was among those who voted to advance the measure on Thursday. Democrats want to have a robust debate where we can offer amendments and improve the bill, Schumer said.

Warming stations aren’t the only services the Jimmie Hale Mission is offering this holiday season.The downtown campus has a new facility that allows the nonprofit to meet a greater need: a new dormitory. The dorm allows the nonprofit to house 98 men and was converted to a newer model with pods to give residents a sense of privacy and dignity while they seek help from Jimmie Hale.Residents have their own space with beds and a locked closet, and more bathrooms have been added as well.It’s a chance for those staying with the mission to feel as if they own something and strive towards making progress with getting back on their feet.”Everyone that comes to the Jimmie Hale Mission to seek a hand up has their own small private space,” said Jimmie Hale Mission executive director Perryn Carol. “That restores dignity, gives time for reflection and study, and has increased harmony in graduation rates here. Significantly, they start to make eye contact and speak more. They get along with other suitemates. There’s a positive interaction that helps them in their journey to getting back on their feet. “Between all of its campuses, Jimmie Hale has the overall capacity to house 175 people at any given time.
