Saranac High School girls soccer returns 10 seniors in quest for fourth straight Class B sectional title [Video]

Saranac High School girls soccer is looking to remain the powerhouse they have been for the past several seasons in Class B.The Spartans, who won three straight Section VII championships in the past three seasons, are looking for their fourth in a row for the 2024 season. The team is confident they can do it based on the experience they have across their roster. “We have 10 seniors this year,” said Saranac senior defender Madelyn Willette. “We’ve played with each other since I can’t even remember because we’ve been playing together for so long.”Along with those 10 seniors are seven returners to the starting lineup. Willette reunites with fellow senior defensive backs Paige Ubl and Grace Damiani to support Desiree Jean-Pierre as she handles goalie duties for her second straight season. On offense, Saranac loses outgoing seniors Leah Hamel, McHenna Brown and Kaitlyn Slominski. They also no longer have current senior Brenna Ducatte, who opted to play for the school’s volleyball team this fall. They do return freshman Eve Liberty, sophomore Lily Brown, who were also key contributors to the Spartan offense a year ago. Ubl says the chemistry surrounding this team is strong with all the familiar faces on board this season. “A lot of people have a lot of experience,” Ubl said. “They are helping to introduce newer players and helping everyone to feel more comfortable on the team.”The Spartans also return head coach Amber Liberty. The back-to-back Northern Soccer League Division I Coach of the Year has been a key guide to the Spartans’ success to not only win sectional finals, but also win state playoff games. Saranac has made appearances in the Class B state final four in two of the past three seasons Liberty was at the helm (2021 and 2023). “Amber (Liberty) has always helped us stick together as a team,” Ubl said. “She’s so positive and she keeps us together a lot we do a lot of team building, she just keeps it really positive for us.””She really just understands us all,” Willette said. “She really just wants the best for us, and you can tell she does. She’s always there asking if anything is wrong, she is like a second mom to everybody.”Saranac opens its season on the road in a weekend tournament in Queensbury, New York, before the first NSL game takes place on Friday, Sep. 13, against Ausable Valley High School at 6:30 p.m.

Girl hit by SUV while crossing Worcester street awake after coma [Video]

Ayuen Leet, a 13-year-old Massachusetts girl who was struck by a car while crossing a street is awake and starting rehab following a lengthy coma. Ayuen suffered serious injuries when she was hit by an SUV near 164 Shrewsbury Street on July 30. The teen’s family told WCVB she was walking home from the nearby African Community School when the crash happened. The girl was rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where she was placed in the intensive care unit.”The first days were really devastating, heartbreaking. We did not know if she was going to make it,” said Jok Leet, one of Ayuen’s older brothers. Ayuen, a hardworking student who loves to laugh and draw, spent more than a month in a coma. She didn’t wake up until late last week, when her family said she suddenly opened her eyes and began asking for family members by name.”She tried to talk, say what she wanted, but it was very unclear. That was five days ago,” said Jok Leet. “Today, she’s much better. She can speak clearly, and she can follow instructions, and that’s very reassuring.”The Leet family fled the brutal war in South Sudan and spent seven years in Kenya as refugees before coming to the U.S. to build a new life. Ayuen is the youngest of five children, with one older sister and three older brothers. He said the family is also grateful to those who have donated financial support. “We are here because of you. You (Americans) accepted us and welcomed us, so I say thank you to all Americans,” said Jok Leet. Now that she’s on the mend, Ayuen was moved Wednesday to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston for the next stage of her recovery. “She’s been doing alright with the right side of the body, but there is still much work thats needed to be done on the left side because she damaged the right side of the brain,” her brother said. The driver who hit Ayuen remained on scene after the crash and was subsequently cited for speeding, police confirmed.

Italy luxury yacht victims died of ‘dry drowning,’ first autopsies show [Video]

Initial autopsies of four of the seven victims who died when a superyacht sank in a storm in Italy last month show they died of dry drowning, according to authorities. The phenomenon, also known as atypical drowning, means they had no water in their lungs, tracheas or stomachs, said a spokesperson for the lawyer of the captain of the Bayesian, which went down off the coast of the Sicilian port of Porticello on Aug. 19.The cause of death of the first four victims suggests that they had found an air bubble in the cabin in which five of the victims bodies were discovered, and had consumed all the oxygen before the air pocket turned toxic due to carbon dioxide, according to local media reports. The autopsies of American lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo, Morgan Stanley banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Anne Elizabeth Judith Bloomer were carried out on Wednesday at the Forensic Medicine Institute of the Palermo Polyclinic hospital, officials said.Autopsies on British tech titan Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter are expected to be carried out on Friday. No date has been set yet for the autopsy of Recaldo Thomas, the ships onboard chef due to the difficulty reaching his family in Antigua. All seven victims were scanned for injuries last Saturday, which found none had suffered broken bones or other physical injuries that might have contributed to their deaths. The prosecutor investigating the case first suggested earlier in August the idea that the victims had been searching for an air pocket. The autopsies are part of the criminal investigation into the ships captain James Cutfield, the ships machine engineer Tim Parker Eaton and sailor Matthew Griffith, who was on watch the night of the accident. None of the men is in Italy. They are being investigated for multiple manslaughter and for causing a shipwreck, but authorities say this doesnt mean they will be charged with any crimes. They were allowed to leave the country by the prosecutor in charge of the investigation. The 184-foot yacht sank within 16 minutes of being struck by a downburst or tornado on the early morning of Aug. 19. The ship will have to be raised for the investigation and to ensure that the 18,000 liters of fuel onboard do not leak into the sea around the port of Porticello near Palermo.Bids have been sent out for the salvage, which will be paid for by the company of Lynchs wife Angela Bacares, which owns the yacht.Toxicology results on the seven victims are expected in the coming days. No alcohol or drug tests were carried out on any of the crew members, the prosecutor said in a press conference after all the victims bodies had been recovered.Lynch and his business partner Sushovan Hussain, who died after being struck by a car in London the day the Bayesian sank, had been acquitted of fraud charges in a U.S. court in June 2024. The charges were related to the sale of their company Autonomy to Hewlett Packard, which has said it will not drop its civil lawsuit for $4 billion in damages now being heard in a U.K. court.
