Argentine authorities probe what happened before Liam Payne’s fatal fall from his hotel balcony [Video]

The circumstances surrounding the death of ex-One Direction singer Liam Payne were suspicious and possibly involved drugs, though there was no sign of a third party being involved, Argentine prosecutors said Thursday.Payne, 31, who died on Wednesday, first shot to fame as a teenager and grappled with the pressures of global stardom. As the news ricocheted around the world, fans and media swarmed the Casa Sur Hotel in the chic Palermo neighborhood of Argentinas capital where Payne was found dead after plunging from his third-floor hotel room. All four of Payne’s former One Direction bandmates issued a joint statement saying they were completely devastated.”The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever, said the letter, signed by Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say.The Buenos Aires police said they found Paynes hotel room in complete disarray with broken objects and furniture. They found packs of clonazepam, a central nervous system depressant, energy supplements and over-the-counter medications strewn about his belongings. The Argentine public prosecutor said there also appeared to be alcohol and narcotics in the room.Forensics teams reported that a whiskey bottle, lighter and cellphone were retrieved from the buildings internal courtyard where Paynes body was found. The prosecutor said that the autopsy showed internal bleeding and 25 traumatic injuries to his skull, limbs and abdomen, consistent with a fall. It said those injuries alone were enough to cause his death. There were no signs of a third party being involved, the prosecutor said, but described Payne’s case as suspicious,” citing the star’s apparent alcohol and drug usage. The lack of defensive injuries on Paynes hands indicated that he may have fallen into a state of unconsciousness, the public prosecutor said, contributing to the possibility that Payne was going through some kind of substance abuse episode” at the time. All signs indicated that Payne was alone at the time of his death, the prosecutor added. The results of the requested toxicology tests are pending and could take weeks to become public.Medical examiners listed his cause of death as multiple trauma and internal and external bleeding.” Authorities said they took statements from three hotel employees and two women who had visited Payne in his hotel room hours earlier in an effort to reconstruct Payne’s final moments. The two women had left the hotel by the time of the incident, the prosecution said.Hard-core fans, foreign and local, showed up in droves to cry, sing and pay their respects at the hotel where Payne died. A musically inclined devotee broke into One Direction hits, jamming on his guitar as others sang along and filmed with their phones.Several girls with tear-stained cheeks paused to sit in trance-like silence before a makeshift memorial of candles and colorful flowers spilling prolifically onto the cordoned-off street outside the hotel. Some fans taped up portraits of Payne and handwritten notes with sorrowful slogans like Always in my heart” on a tree trunk. At the city’s central Obelisco some miles away, the usual Thursday afternoon mix of food vendors, tourists and homeless people gave way to a gathering of largely young female fans united in grief. Its very painful that its gone so unexpectedly, 15-year-old Melissa Acua said from the vigil. Obviously I came here to honor him, because it would be an ugly way for him to go if we didn’t.On Wednesday, police said Payne had jumped from the balcony of his room, without elaborating on how they came to that conclusion or whether the jump was intentional. Police said they had rushed to the hotel in response to an emergency call just after 5 p.m. local time that had warned of an intoxicated guest acting erratically.A hotel manager can be heard on a 911 call recording obtained by The Associated Press saying the hotel has a guest who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol. … Hes destroying the entire room and, well, we need you to send someone, please.Tributes continued pouring in Thursday from pop industry figures and fellow musicians.Payne was known as the tousle-headed, sensible one of the quintet that went from a TV talent show to a pop phenomenon with a huge international following of swooning fans. In recent years, he had acknowledged struggling with alcoholism, saying in a YouTube video posted in July 2023 that he had been sober for six months after receiving treatment. We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and well remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul, his family said in a statement through Payne’s representative. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, who performed with One Direction in 2014, said he was shocked and saddened. The Backstreet Boys said in a social media post that their hearts go out to Directioners around the world. In past interviews, Payne alluded to the grueling consequences of growing up against the surreal backdrop of the entertainment industry.I dont think you can ever deal with that. It’s all a bit crazy for us to see that people get in that sort of state of mind about us and what we do, he told the AP in 2013, recounting an experience where a fan was in a state of shock upon meeting him.One Direction announced an indefinite hiatus in 2016, and Payne like each of his erstwhile bandmates pursued a solo career, shifting toward EDM and hip-hop.While former bandmember Styles became a huge solo star, the others had more modest success. Payne’s 2017 single Strip That Down, featuring Quavo, reached the Billboard Top 10, and stayed on the charts for several months. He put out an album LP1 in 2019, and his last release a single called Teardrops was released in March. In 2020, to mark the 10th anniversary of One Direction, Payne shared a screenshot of a text message he sent to his father on the day he joined the group, which read: Im in a boyband. What a journey I had no idea what we were in for when I sent this text to my dad years ago at this exact time the band was formed, he wrote.___Associated Press journalists Natacha Pisarenko and Almudena Calatrava contributed reporting from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Robert Jenrick references Churchill as he says Britain must leave ECHR | News [Video]

Conservative Party leader hopeful Robert Jenrick referenced Winston Churchill as he called for Britain to leave the European Convention of Human Rights (EHCR). Mr Jenrick also called for foreign offenders to be deported as he took part in a Tory leadership debate against Kemi Badenoch on GB News on Thursday (17 October). When asked about keeping people safe, Mr Jenrick said his government would build more prisons. Mr Jenrick said: We need to get the 10,000 foreign national offenders out of prison, that would be a good start. When Churchill thought of the right to a family life he never thought of the idea of a foreign rapist or murderer having the right to stay in our country.

Control the path and power of hurricanes? Forget it, scientists say [Video]

Hurricanes are humanitys reminder of the uncontrollable, chaotic power of Earths weather.Miltons powerful push toward Florida just days after Helene devastated large parts of the Southeast likely has some in the region wondering if they are being targeted. In some corners of the Internet, Helene has already sparked conspiracy theories and disinformation suggesting the government somehow aimed the hurricane at Republican voters.Besides discounting common sense, such theories disregard weather history that shows the hurricanes are hitting many of the same areas they have for centuries. They also presume an ability for humans to quickly reshape the weather far beyond relatively puny efforts such as cloud seeding.Related video above: Hurricane Milton prompts evacuations along Florida’s Gulf CoastIf meteorologists could stop hurricanes, we would stop hurricanes, Kristen Corbosiero, a professor of atmospheric and environmental sciences at the University at Albany. If we could control the weather, we would not want the kind of death and destruction thats happened.Heres a look at what humans can and cant do when it comes to weather:The power of hurricanes, heightened by climate changeA fully developed hurricane releases heat energy that is the equivalent of a 10-megaton nuclear bomb every 20 minutes more than all the energy used at a given time by humanity, according to National Hurricane Center tropical analysis chief Chris Landsea. And scientists are now finding many ways climate change is making hurricanes worse, with warmer oceans that add energy and more water in the warming atmosphere to fall as rain, said Chris Field, director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. The amount of energy a hurricane generates is insane, said Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach. Its the height of human arrogance to think people have the power to change them, he said. But that hasn’t stopped people from trying, or at least thinking about trying.Historical efforts to control hurricanes have failedJim Fleming of Colby College has studied historical efforts to control the weather and thinks humans have nowhere near the practical technology to get there. He described an attempt in 1947 in which General Electric partnered with the U.S. military to drop dry ice from Air Force jets into the path of a hurricane in an attempt to weaken it. It didn’t work. The typical science goes like understanding, prediction and then possibly control, Fleming said, noting that the atmosphere is far more powerful and complex than most proposals to control it. It goes back into Greek mythology to think you can control the powers of the heavens, but also it’s a failed idea.In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the federal government briefly tried Project STORMFURY. The idea was to seed a hurricane to replace its eyewall with a larger one that would make the storm bigger in size but weaker in intensity. Tests were inconclusive and researchers realized if they made the storm larger, people who wouldnt have been hurt by the storm would now be in danger, which is an ethical and liability problem, the project director once said.Video below: Flooding is one of the biggest threats faced during hurricane seasonFor decades, the National Hurricane Center and its parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, have been asked about nuclear-bombing a hurricane. But the bombs aren’t powerful enough, and it would add the problem of radioactive fallout, Corbosiero said.Bringing cooling icebergs or seeding or adding water-absorbing substances also are ideas that just dont work, NOAA scientists said.Climate change begets engineering and lots of questionsFailed historical attempts to control hurricanes differ somewhat from some scientists’ futuristic ideas to combat climate change and extreme weather. That’s because instead of targeting individual weather events, modern geoengineers would operate on a larger scale thinking about how to reverse the broad-scale damage humans have already done to the global climate by emitting greenhouse gases.Scientists in the field say one of the most promising ideas they see based on computer models is solar geoengineering. The method would involve lofting aerosol particles into the upper atmosphere to bounce a tiny bit of sunlight back into space, cooling the planet slightly.Supporters acknowledge the risks and challenges. But it also “might have quite large benefits, especially for the worlds poorest,” said David Keith, a professor at the University of Chicago and founding faculty director of the Climate Systems Engineering initiative. Two years ago, the largest society of scientists who work on climate issues, the American Geophysical Union, announced it was forming an ethics framework for climate intervention.”Some scientists warn that tinkering with Earths atmosphere to fix climate change is likely to create cascading new problems. Pennsylvania State University climate scientist Michael Mann expressed worries on the ethics framework that just talking about guidelines will make the tinkering more likely to occur in the real world, something that could have harmful side effects.Field, of Stanford, agreed that the modeling strongly encourages that geoengineering could be effective, including at mitigating the worst threats of hurricanes, even if that’s decades away. But he emphasized that it’s just one piece of the best solution, which is to stop climate change by cutting greenhouse gas emissions.Whatever else we do, that needs to be the core set of activities, he said.

Fiber optics apprenticeship suggests a promising future for broadband access in Vermont [Video]

A new apprenticeship program meant to help boost high-speed internet in Vermont is coming to Orleans County.Vermont Community Broadband Board has announced the kickoff of its new fiber optic apprenticeship program at the North Country Career Center. The idea is to get young Vermonters trained up to learn how to use fiber optics and get into the industry early. The end goal is to get high-speed internet to more rural communities across the state.NBC5 took a tour of the training center in Newport and caught up with the people who made it all happen. Christie Hallquist, the executive director of Vermont Community Broadband Board, told us the program will be a gamechanger for the future of internet access in Vermont communities.”People who are not connected in rural areas are people with poor connections. Three or four years is a long time for them. The more technicians we can get, the faster we can get this done,” said Hallquist.Lisa Tellstone of the Wireless Infrastructure Association is an Orleans County resident herself. She said this program will pay off in the long run for Vermonters.”I’m personally invested in seeing apprenticeship expand in Vermont. It’s critical to have the nation’s infrastructure,” said Tellstone. The state’s broadband board said it needs 200 more fiber optic engineers to meet their goals. If you are interested in the program, send them an email at vcbb.info@vermont.gov.
