Sport fishing to shut down in Ship Creek for 2 weeks [Video]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – All sport fishing in Ship Creek in the Anchorage area will be closed for two weeks, starting this Saturday.

The Department of Fish and Game stated in a release Wednesday that all waters from the mouth of the river to a “cable 100 feet downstream of the Chugach Power Plant Dam” will close 6 a.m. Saturday and will stay shuttered until 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, July 13.

Fish and Game added that when it reopens, fishermen will not be allowed to keep king salmon caught for the rest of the year.

The shutdown is to help preserve salmon numbers — which Fish and Game says have been low — and to “ensure we meet our broodstock needs at the hatchery.”

“Sport fishing has been slow on the creek and if the fish don’t show up late, we could jeopardize future returns to Ship Creek,” Area Management Biologist Brittany Blain-Roth said in the release.
