Social Media Alliance to Prevent Drug Use [Video]

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) -Several of the world’s biggest social media companies will now work to keep their platforms from being the biggest distribution hubs for synthetic drugs.

It’s all part of what’s called, the Alliance to Prevent Drug Harms. The joint effort between the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Meta (owner of Facebook and WhatsApp,) Twitter or “X” and Snapchat.

The signing parties collaborating to “disrupt” illegal drug activities online and amplify public awareness to the dangers of synthetic drug misuse.

Synthetic drug use is seen an international crisis. Spice, bath salts and molly drug usage, to name of few, is a problem no one government and no one sector can tackle alone.

According to the 2024 World Drug Report, 292 million people used drugs in 2022 — a 20% increase from the last decade.
