So, you’re home’s pipes froze or busted. What’s next? [Video]

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Dropping and freezing temperatures can mean bad news for your pipes inside your home or businesses.

General Manager, Bob Weiland from Godwin’s Hardware and Plumbing in Grand Rapids said low temperatures paired with strong winds can sometimes cause problems for your home’s piping system.

But how and why does this happen? 

“When water freezes, it expands. We let that freeze thaw. We get that little bit of movement, that little bit of movement can crack and damage the pipe,” said Weiland.

However, he said there are things you can do to protect your home.

“Shut the water off, that would be ideal, because obviously, with broken pipes, there’s going to be water leaking,” said Weiland.

He said a good indication that your pipes have frozen or busted is if you see water damage in your walls.
