Small Towns: Surings rosemaling extraordinaire [Video]

SURING, Wis. (WBAY) – It’s a form of decorative painting that developed in Norway around the 1700s. Rosemaling, which means rose painting, is a style of art an Oconto County woman fell in love with more than 50 years ago.

This week in Small Towns, we travel to Suring to see the beautiful work she’s still painting after all these years.

When you step inside Dora Slang’s 100-year-old home near Suring, you’re guaranteed a couple of things. First, her beautiful artwork, known as rosemaling, is everywhere, from the ceiling to the doors and on just about everything else in between. Second, there’s a good chance you’ll find Dora in her little art room.

“This is my happy place, yes,” says Dora proudly.

She’s working on her latest creation.

“You build on your project, you do the background, anything in the background you do first, as you can see, I did the leaves,” explains Dora.
