CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Recovery efforts have been taking place out of Hickory.
Hundreds of volunteers from pilots to medical professionals are working to evacuate hundreds of people from the disastrous conditions in western North Carolina.
Since Sunday, the Hickory Regional Airport has served as the home base of the operation with multiple organizations and volunteers from various military and emergency backgrounds using their free time to evacuate hundreds of people
Lindsey Duch, a volunteer who has been coordinating rescue missions said the work is being done through various organizations including Project Hope and Operation Airdrop in tandem with volunteers from the Army National Guard and private helicopter pilots who’ve donated time, fuel, and equipment to deliver medical supplies and evacuation needs.
On Tuesday, volunteers had a goal to bring in over 120 people from a couple of assisted living facilities.
