BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Veterans Day is Monday and while some may find it hard to believe, scammers are trying to take advantage of the nation’s retired military men and women.
The Better Business Bureau states criminals are pretending to be government employees offering special grants and programs to steal money and information.
Carl Bates with the BBB said these scammers typically contact vets over the phone, email, or through direct messages on Facebook.
They may entice you with mortgage aid, loan forgiveness, or money to help cover your living expenses.
These scammers often demand a one-time processing fee.
“They usually want it to be paid either with a debt card, or through a Cash App, or a Venmo type situation, sometimes with Cryptocurrency,” Bates stated. “That’s the key that it’s a scam, along with the fact that the government will never make you a special offer as a veteran by a phone call, an email, or a text message.”
