Scam Alert: Mountain Brook Police warn about scammers using familiar businesses to take your money [Video]

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. (WBRC) – A resident of Mountain Brook was recently scammed by someone posing as a representative of a legitimate business. The scammer claimed to be looking out for the customer, but it was a lie, and the person almost lost money.

Fortunately, the victim’s bank noticed the suspicious activity and prevented the transaction from going through. However, the scammer had already gained access to their online account.

The victim called the phone number listed on an email they received about fraudulent charges on their account. This number was labeled as customer service, but it was actually the scammer’s. Through the use of technology and intimidation tactics, the scammer convinced the victim to give them access to their account. Thankfully, the bank intervened and stopped the transactions.

According to Community Relations Officer Megan Thomas, seniors are often targeted by these thieves.
