Pima County levee project underway to remove sediment from 2020 Bighorn Fire [Video]

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Residents across Pima County will receive a letter in the mail in the next couple of days that raises awareness of flood risks during monsoon.

One protection in place are levees, and over 3,100 residents were sent letters letting them know of that flood protection measure.

“We have done something to protect them from flooding,” said Brian Jones, the deputy director and flood plain administrator for the Pima County Flood Control District. “Here is where your money is going, here is your tax dollars at work.”

But the tax dollars will also be used to maintain the levees.

Until November, crews from the county will be removing sediment from points along the Cañada del Oro Wash that came from the Bighorn Fire in 2020.

Plants that would have blocked sediment from going down the mountain were burned instead.
