Patriots still considering starting rookie QB after second preseason game [Video]

The Patriots already have a rookie head coach, after Jerod Mayo took over for the legendary Bill Belichick in the offseason.

Now, they may have a rookie quarterback, too.

The Patriots’ quarterback race is “definitely still a competition” between veteran Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drake Maye, Mayo told reporters on Friday, three weeks before the start of the regular season.

Mayo’s comments came the day after the Patriots’ second preseason game, a 14-13 loss to the Eagles. Maye saw the most action in that contest, going 6-for-11 for 47 yards. Brissett went 3-for-7 for 17 yards.

Maye has been primarily working as the Patriots’ second-team quarterback, with the nine-year NFL veteran Brissett taking starters reps after being signed in the offseason.

But Maye increased his workload from one series in the first preseason game to four in the second, and Mayo said he “definitely took a step forward” in his second outing.
