The PAC won’t be able to investigate RTÉ’s accounts until 2026 at the earliest, despite an “unprecedented” €725m three-year fund, writes Aisling Moloney.
The Vice Chair of the Public Accounts Committee Catherine Murphy has called for – the Government to “expedite” legislation which will give the Comptroller and Auditor General oversight of RTÉ’s accounts in the wake of €725m in public money being committed to the broadcaster .
The Department of Media is currently drafting legislation to assign the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) as auditor of RTÉ.
This comes as the national broadcaster has been guaranteed €725m in State funding between 2025 and 2027, in addition to the €56m bailout received in the wake of the controversies identified last year.
Media Minister Catherine Martin said the addition of a multiannual exchequer support for RTÉ was “unprecedented”.
