Red Cross teams have staffed seven shelters with more than a thousand people, according to Red Cross Cascades.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Red Cross workers in Oregon and Southwest Washington departed from the Portland International Airport (PDX) Thursday to help victims of the California wildfires.
“We provide them with food, we provide them with a place to stay, but perhaps more important than anything else, we let them know they aren’t going to walk through this alone,” volunteer Darrell Fuller told KGW.
The Keizer resident has been responding to disasters since 2018, including the 2023 Maui wildfires. He added that the situation will be chaotic in the coming days as they open shelters as people request them, with volunteers having to quickly adapt to changing conditions. The Red Cross often stays in areas for months or longer to help those affected rebuild.
