Norfolk firefighters rescue man from large apartment fire, roads closed [Video]

Portions of Sewells Point Road are closed as crews work to contain a fire at the Mira Mar Apartments Tuesday afternoon.

NORFOLK, Va. — A large, 2-alarm fire at an apartment complex in Norfolk shut down roads and destroyed homes Tuesday afternoon, displacing over 30 people.

The fire broke out at the Mira Mar Apartments on Sewells Point Road shortly after 2 p.m. Officials tell 13News Now one resident was trapped on the second floor. That person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A second person was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Norfolk police said traffic lanes in the 7100 block of Sewells Point Road are shut down between Johnston Road and Kennedy Street.

Firefighters said the middle apartment building is a total loss, and high winds caused the fire to spread to buildings next door. They are continuing to work to put out hot spots.
