NJ fire spreads to multiple homes; 2 firefighters injured [Video]

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A fire in Jersey City that spread to multiple apartments on Friday night left two firefighters injured and 26 people displaced, prosecutors said.

The Jersey City Fire Department was alerted of a fire at 3507 Kennedy Blvd shortly before 11 p.m., and upon arrival, responders found heavy smoke and fire coming from the building.

Officials believe that the blaze, which escalated to 4-alarms, originated on the ground business level and spread to adjacent residential units.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries in the emergency response. They were treated at Jersey City Medical Center.

Twenty-six residents were displaced due to the fire, prosecutors said. The Red Cross of New Jersey is helping the nine families affected receive emergency assistance for temporary lodging, food, clothes and other essentials.

The fire comes as departments across the Tri-State area are focused on drought conditions and widespread brush fires.
