CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Companies are being targeted in a new phishing scam in which scammers are using fake emails to trick businesses into sharing information.
According to the FBI, cybercriminals are using stolen government email addresses in an attempt to steal the personal information of customers from various companies. The FBI issued what’s called a Private Industry Notification to alert companies of what’s happening.
The bureau is noticing an uptick in cybercriminals posting in online forums about this.
In one example from August 2024, a known cybercriminal posted their sale of “High Quality .gov emails for espionage/social engineering/data extortion, etc.,” which included U.S. credentials. The poster said they could guide a buyer through emergency data requests and sell real stolen subpoena documents to pose as a law officer.
Eric O’Neill, a cybersecurity expert and former FBI operative, said cybercriminals are good at what they do, which is why you need to be on high alert.
