MONTEVALLO, Ala. (WBRC) – City officials in Montevallo are taking steps to uncover its African American history by installing plaques at historic locations.
With help from the historic commission and the Montevallo Legacy project, they installed three markers as part of the Montevallo’s African American Heritage Trail.
City leaders believe Montevallo is the hidden gem of Shelby County and wanted to honor and recognize the people that helped pave and build the city.
The idea for this project started about 4 years ago after city officials noticed there was a lack of African American history in Montevallo.
This year, three plaques were placed at the Ward Chapel Church, the oldest black church in the city, Shiloh Baptist Church and Mason Hall, a gathering and event space for many in the community.
