ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Hurricane Helene’s impacts were minimal in Kennesaw, but about 200 miles away in Asheville, North Carolina people are still reeling from the damage.
The storm caused massive flooding across the city, damaging homes, cars and businesses. Thousands are still without power, and many are now scrambling to find food and fresh water.
Kennesaw resident Cheri Barger grew up in Asheville and that’s where her daughter, Shelby, lives now. She spoke with Shelby Friday on the phone as she was heading out to gas up her car. Then, cell service went dark for about 24 hours.
“It just kept getting worse and worse and the rain wasn’t stopping,” Cheri said. “I couldn’t get in touch with my dad, my brother, my sister, no one. There was no cell service whatsoever.”
On Saturday, Cheri’s phone finally rang. It was her daughter saying she was okay.
